A young man in Cape Town’s Doornbach informal settlement near Table view put a rope around his neck, tied it the roof beam of his one roomed shack and hung himself on Sunday night. The lifeless body of Malibongwe Nxelana, 20, was later discovered by his friend.

Now his older brother Sindizile Nxelana, 28, who shared the shack with him, also wants to kill himself but his friends are keeping a close eye on him, said neighbour and family friend Nolwanda Yama,40.

It was unclear why Malibongwe killed himself. All he left was a not written in yellow on a cabinet that said ‘funda iphepha’, meaning ‘read the paper’.

However, there was no paper or suicide note left in the shack, said Yama.

Sindizile said he still did not understand why his younger brother killed himself, describing him as “a sweet guy who did any type of work to eke out a living”.

In between sobs, he said he could no longer stay in the shack he had shared with his brother as the image of his brother’s body swaying from the rafter would always come to mind.

Community Leader Zoliswa Gila said earlier on Sunday afternoon she had seen Malibongwe drinking with his friends.

Yama said a friend of Malibongwe’s had told community leaders that they had “a few beers” at the shebeen on Sunday.

She said Malibongwe’s friend had said Malibongwe told them he was going home for a while and if he did not return to the shebeen they could find him at his shack.

Table View Police Station Commander Colonel Dirk Vosloo confirmed Malibongwe’s suicide.

Vosloo said Police patrolling in the area were called to the shack where they found his body hanging. He said Metro paramedics certified Malibongwe dead at the scene and his body was taken to the Salt River mortuary.

There is no foul play suspected at this stage, said Vosloo, although an inquest docket has been opened for investigations. — West Cape News
