Taxi service on the end of ANC Youth League line

A Sea Point taxi business is getting increasingly frustrated that many of their callers are trying to get hold of the Western Cape ANC Youth League.

People trying to get hold of the ANC YL in the province are calling the taxi operators as the telephone number listed on the ANC YL site goes through to Sea Point Original Radio Taxis (SPORT) despite the company doing all it can to alert the youth league to the error.

The company has also tried to notify Telkom but has had no success. Now, when a caller looking the ANC Youth League comes through, they simply tell them about the taxi services they offer.

SPORT General Manager Ayub Baker said the problem has been going on for over a year now, and they receive about three to four calls a day from people wishing to contact the Western Cape ANC YL.

Baker said when they realized a year ago that the ANC YL number was coming to them they were irritated and tried to talk to the youth league.

He said he managed to speak to the youth league leaders in the province but the problem had still not been fixed.

Now, he had instructed the SPORT phone operators to simply use “this opportunity to tell the caller about the services we offer”.
“We have been reporting to Telkom and the ANC, but the calls are still coming in. At first we used to tell the caller it is a wrong number and we drop the phone but now we decided to use it tour advantage,” said Baker.

Senzeni Mphila, speaking on behalf of the ANC YL in the Western Cape, said he was not aware of the problem and promised that he would contact the national officer and inform them.

Asked whether he believed the website was hacked, he laughed and said: “I don’t know but I don’t think so.”

He directed further queries to the national youth league office. – Sandiso Phaliso
