Six life sentences for killer who gunned down six men

A Khayelitsha man who gunned down six people, four of them within a month last year, was given six life sentences by the Western Cape High Court yesterday.

Two of 23-year-old Phindile Mhlobo’s victims were shot dead because they were making too much noise while watching a soccer match on August 27, 2011 and a third person survived after being shot in the chin.

His victims were Zola Mgujulwa and Mhlangabezi Gxilishe. Tatende Gondo was wounded.

On the same day he assaulted and robbed Masibulele Jada, Lindikhaya Mgotywa, Goodwin Zinzada and Nikelwa Dyosiba.

A month later, on September 21, Mhlobo gunned down Terence Gushman and attempted to kill Jabu Madikane.

He also assaulted and robbed Lankie Rasmente of R700 cash.

Mhlobo was also convicted of killing Thabile Ntshilane and Themba Patrick Hlazo on November 28, 2010, shooting them each twice in the upper body.

In total, Mhlobo was found guilty on 15 counts including six murders, two attempted murders, four robberies with aggravating circumstances and three charges of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has also welcomed the sentencing.

Pamela Mgujulwa, wife to deceased Zola Mgujulwa, said the sentencing was a lesson to would be criminals that crime does not pay.

Mgujulwa said life was not the same without Zola.

NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said although nothing could make up for the loss of a loved one, “ we hope that they will find satisfaction in knowing that the man who killed their loved ones and terrorized them, will never walk the streets of Khayelitsha again”.

Ntabazalila appealed to communities to work with the authorities to stop criminals from holding them at ransom.

“Surely, somebody knew that this young man had an unlicensed firearm and was committing serious crimes,” said Ntabazalila.  – Sandiso Phaliso
