Four teenagers from Bardale, Mfuleni were allegedly abducted by a 36-year old man who kept them locked up in a shack for five days, gave them drugs and sexually abused them.

The girls were freed yesterday after surrounding residents became aware of their plight and are searching for the man.

However, the girls, aged between 13 and 14, were also subjected to a gruelling interrogation by residents and threatened with a sjambok.

Bardale residents were alerted to the plight of the girls when they called out through the barred window to a passerby, asking if he would buy them cigarettes.

When the he asked them what they were doing inside the shack, the girls claimed the owner locked them inside.

The man informed residents and community leaders who forced the door open.

Community leader Mthunzi Khala said he was informed by a man that four girls were locked inside the shack.

“I went to check what was happening. I found other residents waiting outside but too scared to open the shack. I kicked the door and hammered to open it. We found the girls sitting inside. The smell inside the shack was so unbearable,” said Khala.

He said he took the girls outside the shack and questioned them.

Two of the girls claimed to be related to the man, saying he was their ‘uncle’ but when asked, could not provide his name.

A sister of one of the 13-year-old girls said she last saw her younger sister last on Saturday when she left home with a friend.

“We’ve been up and down looking for her with no luck,” she said.

The girl said she was on her to the shop when she saw a man standing at the window where her sister was being held.

“I asked him what he was doing there, he said four girls asked him to buy them a cigarette. I went closer to the window but they ran away. I called my mother telling her that I suspect my sister was inside, that’s when she opened the window, telling me she was inside.”

She said her sister told her the owner of the shack had locked them inside.

When West Cape News arrived at the scene residents were interrogating the girls.

The girls first denied being sexually abused by the man but when interrogated and threatened with a sjamboks, said he had slept with them.

They said the man harassed them and fed them dagga, one said she was given tik.

“He slept with all of us. The man has been giving us money to buy booze, cigarettes, dagga sometimes he gives me money to buy tik. We all share a small couch, then one will sleep in a bed with him. Sometimes he would touched all of us before sleeping with one of us,” said a 14-year-old.

Two of the girls, who are twins, live in Lower Crossroads but were in Mfuleni visiting friends last week, the other two live in Bardale.

Khala said the incident left residents very angry.

“Everyone is up and down looking for him. As residents we do not approve of this, but I wish police get him first before residents because they will kill him,” he said.

Residents later called the police and the girls were taken to Blue Downs Police Station. – Nombulelo Damba
