Using his belt, a Cape Town man committed suicide by hanging himself from a shipping container outside Wesfeuer Hospital in Atlantis yesterday.

The man’s age has not been established.

About 50 residents gathered outside the hospital perimeter fence, gawking at the tragedy.

Mario Bratz was first to discover the body when he arrived at the hospital at 5am to seek medical attentions.

He saw a body hanging next to the shipping container near the hospital entrance.

Disturbed, he alerted security guards who feigned nervousness and ignorance.

Mario said he then reported the incident to cops who were at the hospital.

He said at the time there were two police vans and four cops guarding a suspect.

“I ran to the cops and called them and showed them the body. The whole morning the cops were at the hospital but didn’t see the body, not even the security guards. I confronted them and questioned their competency,” said a visibly upset Bratz.

When the Western Cape forensic services arrived, a female paramedic was seen crying after seeing the body. She was wiping her eyes with a tissue.

The body was removed at 10am.

Atlantis Police spokesman Captain Cyril Dicks confirmed the suicide.

“An inquest docket has been opened concerning the death of an elderly man found at Wesflueur hospital at 6am,” said Dicks. — Peter Luhanga/WCN
